Patek Philippe Cubitus Review: A Square Evolution of the Nautilus Legacy

Introducing the Patek Philippe Cubitus Collection: Bold Elegance with a Familiar Heritage

The Patek Philippe Cubitus collection marks a significant new chapter in the brand’s iconic lineup of luxury sports watches. With echoes of the legendary Nautilus, the Cubitus is a bold yet elegant offering that represents the brand’s first new collection since the Twenty-4 in 1999. Sporting a unique square case with softened edges and an integrated bracelet, the Cubitus combines the contemporary with the classic in a strikingly angular design.

The Square Evolution of Sports Elegance
At the heart of the collection lies the Cubitus Ref. 5821 and Ref. 5822P, each featuring a distinctive square bezel and unmistakable “ears” flanking the case. Available in stainless steel, two-tone steel and rose gold, and a platinum variation, the collection merges clean, geometric lines with Patek Philippe’s hallmark attention to detail and craftsmanship.

With a case measuring 45mm diagonally, the Cubitus takes up more wrist presence than its rounded siblings but manages to maintain a slim, ergonomic profile. Despite its square design, the watch feels balanced, aided by its thinness—8.3mm for the time-and-date models and 9.6mm for the Grand Date complication.

Ref. 5821: The Steel and Two-Tone Variants
The entry-level Cubitus Ref. 5821/1A features a sleek, olive-green dial reminiscent of the final edition of the Nautilus 5711. Its stainless steel case and integrated bracelet are quintessentially sporty, yet refined, creating a harmonious balance between form and function. Meanwhile, the two-tone Ref. 5821/1AR elevates the design further, combining steel and 18k rose gold, with a deep blue dial and gold accents, offering a luxurious twist on this already stunning timepiece.

Both models are powered by the in-house Caliber 26-330 S C, a robust automatic movement that provides hours, minutes, seconds, and date functions. The horizontal embossed pattern on the dial, coupled with the integrated bracelet’s fluidity, echoes the DNA of the Nautilus, while introducing a sharper, more angular silhouette.

Ref. 5822P: The Grand Date and Moon Phases
The flagship model, Cubitus Ref. 5822P, is perhaps the most technically impressive in the collection. Crafted from platinum, this reference features an all-new Caliber 240 PS CI J LU, which brings together a big date, day, and moon phase complication. With a micro-rotor construction and six patents filed for its intricate mechanisms, the 5822P achieves instantaneously jumping calendar indications in under 0.018 seconds, reflecting Patek Philippe’s commitment to horological innovation.

The platinum case, paired with a navy blue composite strap, exudes an understated elegance that belies its complexity. Unlike its siblings, this model is geared towards those who appreciate both technical mastery and refined aesthetics, and at CHF 75,000, it is priced to reflect its exclusivity.

A New Era of Patek Philippe
The Cubitus collection, with its striking square shape and integrated design, clearly draws inspiration from the Nautilus, but it forges its own identity. Thierry Stern, the president of Patek Philippe, has envisioned a more angular yet versatile sports watch that not only reflects the evolving taste of modern collectors but also captures the brand’s innovative spirit.

For watch enthusiasts and collectors, the Cubitus isn’t just another iteration of a popular design; it’s a statement. It blends luxury, sportsmanship, and technical prowess into a collection that is certain to create waves in the watch community.

For those fortunate enough to add one to their collection, the Cubitus deserves a proper display. The Watch Stand from Wristonomy provides the perfect platform for showcasing this masterpiece. Crafted with the same attention to detail, it complements the Cubitus, ensuring it rests securely and elegantly when not on the wrist. First person who sends ut a photo of the Cubitus on our watch stand will get a nice gift.
